LV Electrical Design Engineer (Rail)

£300 - £350 per day

London

6 month contract

UK Power Networks Services – Rail’s role is to design and construct the defined substation upgrades within SSR2. This includes replacing the existing transformer rectifiers with 2.5MW transformer rectifier units, replacing existing auxiliary transformers, battery chargers, LV systems and HV & DC switchgear and their associated protection changes (including remote end modifications). Installation of new 11kV cabling and fibre optic cabling to support the Substation Upgrades. This post is within the central design team reporting to the Engineering Manager.

As the Design Engineer you will be responsible for producing outline and detailed electrical designs on AC and DC electrical networks supplying traction power to overground and underground railways from a scope provided by Project Managers, Customers or ITT’s. You will be responsible for the production of Electrical Designs that can be constructed in a safe efficient manner and conform to all relevant Codes of Practice. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and company procedures including CDM Regulations.

As the successful applicant you will have:


  • A proven electrical engineering background and experience in electrical engineering with emphasis on small power (400v) and lighting design experience in the rail environment

  • Competence in resolving a significant range of technical power engineering issues and in providing technical advice; a sound understanding of company standards and policies and their application to this role. Awareness of current and technological developments in distribution plant and equipment

  • Ability to work with external engineering organisations and customers/stakeholders representing UK Power Networks to best effect

  • A good safety culture and sound understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application in this role

  • Ability to work unsupervised, set and comply with own targets, and identify and implement innovative cost saving solutions.

  • Good team working skills

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications, in particular: Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and be competent in written and oral communications

  • Qualified to a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer Status (via HNC/HND or degree or equivalent in electrical engineering) with proven relevant experience
